but I did manage a trip to the Hutchinson Zoo with Patsy on this
almost perfect day.
The zoo was an impulse trip; as we arrived, Bob Kirby was driving the
zoo's Prairie Thunder train.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Budget problems may force Hutchinson officials
to end free admission at the city's zoo.
Marcy, who's a new zookeeper at the Hutchinson Zoo, was feeding them
fish. They're a good catch. She tossed each of them a fish in rapid
succession so they didn't fight over them.
We chatted with Marcy for quite awhile.

Charlotte Poepperling, Hutchinson Zoo director, took in an orphaned
deer Monday night. Its mother was killed by a combine in western
Kansas.
Poepperling has run the zoo for years and said she's proud of the free
admission.

The Hutchinson Zoo has been closed since a storm May 23 that caused
water to spill out of its lagoons and swamp exhibits and walkways.

Zoo supporters say they would like the zoo to remain free, but
acknowledge that charging admission could provide money for
expansion or to help the zoo's
The Hutchinson Zoo reopens this weekend. It's been closed since May
because of massive flooding. At that time, heavy rains caused the
groundwater to rise and flood nearly the entire zoo.
