The Lake Superior Zoo is located in the beautiful lakeside city
of Duluth, and is one of only 180 zoo's and aquariums (out of more
than 1800) in the United States to have achieved the ranking of an
Accredited Institution of the American Zoo and Aquarium
The Lake Superior Zoo is dedicated to the responsible
stewardship of our natural environment through exhibition of living
animals and plants and programs in conservation and wildlife
education.
History :In 2002, the Lake Superior Zoo was identified as an opportune
site to launch the first Rebuild Minnesota renewable energy
demonstration project in northern Minnesota. With over 150,000
visitors per year the Zoo projects are highly visible to a diverse
audience.

The Lake Superior Zoo was started in 1923
by Bert Onsgard, with support from the city of Duluth and the
community. The first resident of the zoo was a white-tailed deer named
Billy.
The Lake Superior Zoo is by no means the largest zoo around. It cannot
boast the collection of animals that major metropolitan zoos have, but
it is definitely charming in a different sense.
Lake Superior Zoo is
small enough that younger children can walk the entire thing. There is
also a gift shop and a cafe, which is only open during the summer. The
zoo itself is open year-round.

The new zoo director in Duluth is working to restore accreditation.
With money from the Lake Superior Zoological Society, he has
ordered an $8,500 rapid business assessment. He said he wants to
reapply for accreditation in 2008.
Gulker said he knows he won't be able to expand the zoo anytime soon.
Duluth's Lake Superior Zoo has been chosen as the site for
northeastern Minnesota's first Rebuild Minnesota renewable energy
demonstration project.

Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, MN. To get to this Zoo, take I-35 north
into Duluth. As you start going down the BIG HILL, yes it's very Big
and Long, ( I've coasted 3 miles!) Anyway....
Beautifully landscaped, the Lake Superior Zoo is a great way to spend
a nice day. You will be able to walk the entire grounds easily as this
smaller sized zoo is not laid out in a way in which miles of walking
are necessary to cover it all.
